Isabelle Joy Stephen
Fellow in Nonfiction. AI’m currently working on a collection of essays entitled HISSY FIT. In HISSY FIT, I aim to act as a stenographer of female consumption/consumerism, combining critical analysis, personal narrative, and found images to create hybrid, collage essays centered around how women are spending our money and our time, on and off line. Writing-wise, I would love to use the time/space afforded by this fellowship to transform HISSY FIT from a Master’s thesis to a manuscript; specifically, I want to flesh out “Girl Math” (enclosed), and to further develop an essay called “Sex and Work” about the economy of bodies on the Internet. Matching form to content, I am also looking to build my platform on Substack, with the goal of publishing one short piece of cultural commentary a week (this week, I am looking into nationally licensed personal injury lawyer Alexander Shunnarah’s brainrot Gen Z meme account, and trying to figure out at what age people start filing PI claims). Lastly — and maybe most importantly — my goal for the next year in Boston is to connect with the extant writing community and contribute in any way that I can — including using my connections in the food/beverage industry to organize a reading series aimed at platforming local, emerging, experimental writers. While I’m well-versed on the traditional conventions of genre, my time away from Boston has expanded my understanding of writing and risk, and I would love to use that cross-genre energy to connect with and encourage other writers looking to step outside of their boxes.
